When you were in your younger days,
You weighed a few pounds less, 
You needn't hold your tummy in
To wear a belted dress.

But now that you are older, 
You can set your body free;
There's the comfort of elastic
Where once your waist would be.

And how about those tights you wear 
They're sized by weight, I see,
So that explains why the crotch 
Is down below the knee 

You now need to wear  glasses
As the prints are getting smaller;
And it wasn't very long ago
I know that you were taller.

Though your hair has turned to grey
And your skin no longer fits,
On the inside, you're the same old you,
And I love you still to bits.

I know it's your ( 82nd) birthday, 
Which means that you're not dead,
Though you're getting more forgetful
And mixed up in the head.

You've got used to your arthritis,
To your dentures you're resigned,
You can manage your bifocals
But, I'll bet, you miss your mind,

And sometimes you can't remember,
With one foot on the stair,
If you must go up for something,
Or have just come down from there.

And at the fridge quite often, 
Your poor mind is filled with doubt,
Have you just put food away,
Or have you come to take some out?

And there's many times when it's dark
With your nightcap on your head,
You don't know if you're retiring,
Or just getting out of bed.

Whereas me, I'm none of those things
On my side, I've got time
Except now I've just forgotten
Why I started this rhyme

I was standing by the postbox
With a face so very red,
Instead of mailing you this card,
I opened it instead!

So I've saved a job for the post man
You've got it just the same
I wish you a Happy Birthday
